Glock 19x Problems - The new early 2018 Glock 19X (G19X) crossover available this week is a hybrid combination of the standard fifth-generation Glock 19 (G19) slide and Glock 17 (G17) frame. The G19X uniquely meets the US Army's standards for Modular Handgun System (MHS) competition with a single pistol that is now being offered to the civilian market. The military test version requires a manual thumb safety, while this civilian version does not. I'm glad Glock sent me one early to review and test, and I'd like to share my impressions with you.
Some have asked "why" the combination of the G19 and G17? "What is the purpose of this hybrid gun?" Many people ask out loud. In general, I believe the genesis of this new blend is that one gun fulfills multiple roles and has the advantages of a full-size G17 grip length for better control and a magazine capacity of 17 rounds. This is combined with the improved accuracy, shorter barrel, concealed slide and handling of the Generation 5 G19. However, not all Gen 5 features are included, as explained below.

I'd like to objectively identify the strengths and weaknesses, pick up the G19X and evaluate it for myself, and provide some information. We hope our criteria, opinions, analysis and evaluations help you make your own decisions about your firearm and how you use it. Of course, the choice of any gun depends on your criteria, opinions, preferences, handling and shooting of your gun.

First, I'll give you ten criteria for evaluating the G19X crossover. Then, I will present the specs and features of the G19X. Next, I'll evaluate each of the ten criteria element by element and then give my final opinion on the G19X, as well as optimal usage ideas and recommendations.

I want to state up front that I am not on Glock's payroll, they did not pay me for this review or my opinion, nor was I influenced by them or anyone else to say anything about this gun or product. Read on to find out if I recommend the G19X.
Here are 10 criteria and factors I use to evaluate any handgun, and I will use it for the G19X. Besides my criteria, there are other subjective features that appeal to some, such as a particular style, mag release location, action, caliber, shape, number of mags included, sight type/modification, drill axis, rail, and grip. Large, non-porting or porting, including holsters and pouches, customer service, etc. So, I combined it with the last various criteria. I have to admit that all gun selection decisions involve trade-offs, but I want all criteria to be met. I was awarded 10 points for each of the ten criteria for a total score of 100 points. You can always add your additional criteria and preferences or subtract anything I need.
On the G19X's range, I shot about 225 total rounds for some basic field tests. I shot the high-end Sig Sauer V-Crown 115 grain JHP (1185 fps muzzle velocity, 359 ft-lbs of muscle energy) and the Sig Sauer Elite Performance 115 grain FMJ (1185 fps muzzle velocity, 359 nfllbs). Sauer Energy. V-Crown 124 grain JHP (1165 fps muscle velocity, 374 foot pounds muscle energy) bullet. I bought and shot about 100 rounds of Blazer Brass 124 grain FMJ (1090 fps muscle velocity, 327 ft lbs muscle energy).
Range Report: Glock 45 9mm Pistol
Shooting this variety of JHP and FMJ cartridges confirmed for me that this G19X can handle a wide variety of bullet weights and ammo types, especially hollow point. I usually shoot 500 rounds over two days to help me make decisions about the gun, but it wasn't until I shot about 225 rounds that I got the information I needed. I will take another to confirm the initial assessment. Below are the evaluations for each of the ten criteria. I have had no malfunctions or blockages and I have shot the gun with JHP and FMJ ammo. I would like to thank Sig Sauer for providing premium V-Crown JHP and Elite Performance FMJ rounds to test and evaluate this Glock 19X Crossover 9mm pistol. Also, thanks to my wife for the allowance to buy Brass Blazer test ammo.
First, I have a question about whether this G17 full size frame and G19 compact slide will work together on the 19X. Others say it's backlash for concealed carry. A compact G19 frame/grip and a long slide G17 are a must have, especially for preventing printing and a longer sight distance. From my perspective and my mind, there is no doubt that this gun is not a concealed carry gun. (For some people it just can't be a concealed carry gun.) But it's designed as a combat and tactical duty weapon for military and law enforcement… and civilians can use it for home defense and fun range plinking. . Even Glock VP Josh Dorsey said:
"The 19X was developed for the military, a practical everyday pistol that will do what you need it to do, every time, in every situation."
When I first handled this hybrid gun, I was impressed by the way it felt nice and solid in the hand. It is easy to take and I can control it well. The G17's long, solid, full-size grip and frame size help with recoil and muzzle flip. Also, my non-Gen 5 G17 mags fit this G19X and I have had no over-insertion or function issues. Note that Gen 5 mags do not fit in the G19X magwell. The small spin of the G19 helps me get on target and stop quickly. The lack of finger grooves on the frontstrap is not a problem for me and medium hands. It also has a rough textured frame Gen 5. I liked the high capacity 17 rounds, 19 rounds and two full 19 round mags. The G19X's new nDLC finish on the barrel and nPVD (nitrated base physical vapor disposition) finish on the slide look great to me in the new coyote (tan) color. The PVD coating finish provides high corrosion resistance with low surface friction and a hardness greater than 80 on the Rockwell hardness scale. This, in general, means less maintenance.
Gen 3 Charging Handle
It comes with an ambidextrous slide stop lever, a lanyard loop (removable if needed), and a reversible mag release, but I see little use for it. An old lanyard loop for retention will help, but it really works as a removable insert on the back of the frame, like a plug to keep debris out. The G19X does not have an external safety, which is fine for a striker-fired rifle and for me. It has two additional modular backstraps and two beavertails so the grip can be adjusted with or without the beavertail.
As with the Glock 17 Gen 5 I reviewed earlier, a highlight feature of the G19X may be the crisp and smooth Gen 5 trigger. The Gen 5 trigger has a revised trigger bar, revised trigger spring assembly and double locking block pin assembly. The Gen 5 safety plunger has been redesigned to allow a smoother trigger press. Even the firing pin hole was changed to a different tear-drop shape for the Gen 5s to prevent debris and crud in the firing pin channel, reducing the risk of light primary attack. I have dual recoil springs and nice Glock tritium night sights as standard included features. This is reflected in the premium price.
I believe the overall ergonomics of the G19X and the beavertail backstrap option help offset the felt recoil and muscle flip. I personally, due to hand size and personal characteristics, shoot many other types of guns, 1911s, etc., and still have personal concerns (not better or worse, just different) at a 22 degree grip angle. (He said the 18-degree angle grip compared to a 1911 or something.) For me, I have to bend the wrist down and push down more with some Glocks so I don't shoot high, it's practice and familiarity. Problem to deal with. The "natural" grip angle varies from person to person. I've seen the G43 here before, for example, I have a good grip width and it's not that sharp.
The G19X holds three mags of 17 and 19 rounds. Yes, two beautiful tan full mags hold 19 rounds each. Some interesting things to note.
